Ayre E. Dethmers

The purpose of the Donors in making this gift is to commemorate the lives of
Lindsay R. and Hazel R. Ellington, dedicated parents and educators. Hazel R.
Ellington attended the Morehead State Normal School and received credentials
which qualified her for teaching at the elementary level. Her first positions were
in Menifee County and later, with family responsibilities, she served as a
substitute teacher in Bath and Rowan County Schools. Lindsay R. Ellington
received A.B. and M.A. Degrees from the Morehead State College and was a
principal or teacher, primarily with the Kentucky State Department of Education,
for over 40 years. Both were extremely fond and proud of Morehead State and
the educational opportunities it provided for the family. Accordingly, five of their
six children attended Morehead State. Their eldest son chose a military career
and achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer, U.S. Army, Electronic
Calibrations Service. At this institution, or in some cases at other institutions
that were subsequently involved in programs initiated at Morehead State, five
completed A.B. or B.S. programs, four completed M.A. or M.S. programs and
one completed a Ph.D. program. Family honors received from Morehead State
include scholarships, Dean’s List, graduation with distinction and Hall of Fame.

The Donors feel that establishing a scholarship program in the name of their
parents is a most appropriate way of recognizing them, and at the same time, a
way of contributing to a continued supply of teachers and expressing gratitude
to Morehead State for its significance in the lives of this family.

Therefore, the Donors desire to establish a Fund to be known as the:

“Lindsay R. and Hazel R. Ellington Memorial Scholarship”
