Eugene C. Lacefield
Eugene Lacefield, a native Kentuckian, has had a lifelong interest in space exploration. When he
asked for a telescope for his 11th birthday, his mother promised him a telescope if he would read
eleven books. He read the eleven books and then some! Among his favorite authors as a child
were writers from the Golden Age of Science Fiction: Robert A. Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Arthur
C. Clarke, and Poul Anderson. More recent sci-fi favorite authors include Iain M. Banks and
Neil Stevenson.
Eugene completed his undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Kentucky, where
he was for many years the Research Specialist in charge of the Soybean Variety Research
program. In 1978, Eugene and his wife purchased a farm in Henry County, Kentucky. In 2019,
they donated 328 acres which is now dedicated as the Drennon Creek State Nature Preserve.
Eugene remains an avid fan of NASA, Space-X, and other extra-terrestrial endeavors. He
received a scholarship as a research assistant and wants to provide similar assistance to students
interested in studying space exploration at Morehead State University.
