Gary M. Schaal

Barbara Heinlein grew up on a farm outside Somerville, Ohio where she was raised by her
adoptive parents along with two older adopted brothers. She came to Morehead State University
in the fall of 1963 where she made many friends as she did throughout her life. She was an MSU
cheerleader during her sophomore year. She left MSU before earning her degree, but her time at
MSU was special to her.

Gary Schaal grew up in the Columbus, Ohio area and came to MSU after attending a year at Ohio
State. Gary and Barbara became friends and dated during their time as students. Some of Gary’s
favorite memories from this time of his life included evenings spent with friends, including Barbara,
at the Campus Restaurant on Main Street. Gary withdrew from school and returned home to
Columbus where he eventually received his degree at Ohio State and an MBA from Capital
University. When he left MSU, he left without saying goodbye to Barbara.

Barbara and Gary went on to have careers and families. However, many years later, in the early
2000’s, Gary and Barbara reconnected. While they each had families of their own, they were able
to have a special friendship. They traveled to MSU each fall and attended MSU homecoming
celebrations to reminisce about their days at MSU. Barbara passed away on March 25, 2017,
three days short of her 72nd birthday. To honor her, Gary established this scholarship in her
memory.
