The Morehead Woman’s Club was founded in 1909 by members of the Shakespearean
Study Group. The first president of the club and one of the founders was Cora Wilson
Stewart. She was also a pioneer of adult literacy and founder of the “Moonlight
Schools”. Ms. Stewart envisioned the Morehead Woman’s Club as volunteers in the
field of adult literacy, which remains one of the Club’s projects today. The Morehead
Club was federated in 1916. The club is affiliated with the General Federation of
Woman’s Clubs and GFWC Kentucky.

Throughout the years, the Club’s objectives have remained the same: mental and social
culture and the promotion of better conditions in the community. Members work toward
the Club’s goals through different areas of service within the Club: Arts and Culture,
Civic Engagement and Outreach, Education and Liberties, Environment, and Health and
Wellness.

The Morehead Woman’s Club established a scholarship endowment with the MSU
Foundation in 1996. This scholarship is just one way that the Club continues to support
women in education.
