Van B. Hayne
Marian L. Hayne attended Morehead State University from 2005 until 2009. She was
enrolled in the Veterinary Technology program and completed her Associate Degree in 2007
and her Bachelor of Science with honors in 2009. She was chosen as the Outstanding
Sophomore Student, Department of Agriculture and Human Sciences, School of Science and
Technology for 2005-2006. Marian was named to the Dean’s List three times: Fall, 2005,
Spring, 2006, and Fall, 2007. While at Morehead she received a number of academic and non-
traditional student scholarships.
Marian loved riding for the Morehead State University Equestrian Team during her four
years at MSU. In the spring of her graduation, Marian served as the Show Manager for the
Morehead State Equestrian Club Spring Open Horse Show, April 3-4, 2009.
In addition to her love of animals and riding, Marian loved walking in the Daniel Boone
National Forest and being outdoors; she considered her time at Morehead some of the best years
of her life. Upon graduation and passing the Veterinary Technician National Exam, Marian
moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where she worked for the next eight years for Dr. Lorin Hillman,
a Veterinary Oncologist at Memphis Veterinary Specialists (MVS). Because she strongly
believed there was a right way to care for animals, she was in the process of completing a policy
and procedure manual for MVS at the time of her death.
Marian believed she was called by God to care for animals, so it was only natural that
she took in any and all. Her animal family at one time included 5 dogs, 2 cats, lab rats, and
guinea pigs. She was known for her ability to communicate with owners suffering with their
pets, and she did so with compassion for both animal and owner. Marian loved to read and she
did so constantly. She wrote beautiful and witty letters and stories and could tell a story better
than anyone and have you laughing throughout.
Therefore, to honor not only Marian’s memory but her calling to care for animals and to
help give others an education to follow in her footsteps, this Memorial Scholarship is
established.
